Seder Olam: C08- Lemech

BIBLICAL CHRONOLOGY

Generation 08: Hebrew years 840 to 960 (2920-2800 BCE)

Introduction

After the discovery made by Tuval-Cain, the technique of metal works was used to create weapons. The technique quickly spread across the known world. Life became more dangerous for human beings as conflicts eventually became more frequent between city-states. This was a turn for humanity.

Death of Adam

This was the end of the first millennium from Adam and, symbolically, it was the time when he died, in Hebrew year 930 (2830 BCE), 70 years short of a millennium. According to Tradition, Hanoch buried him in a cave that was later used by the Patriarchs for their burial as well: it became known as the Cave of Machpelah or Cave of the Patriarchs, and it is in Hebron in the Land of Israel.

But Hanoch may still have been in Egypt at the time of Adam's death. So, it would have been Seth, Adam’s son, who buried him in this cave of Hebron, because of a similar pattern followed later by the Patriarchs: each of them buried their wife first, before being buried by their son and heir. So, the same must have applied to Adam, who buried Eve in the cave first and he must have been buried by his son Seth afterwards.

The few people who walked in the path of God were Seth and those who lived with him. Methuselah had already escaped from the civilization of the Nile Valley and had also settled in Canaan near Adam and Seth. They nurtured him in righteousness. In the year 874, he had a son called Lemech.
